An American civil rights activist, Ruby Nell Bridges, was the first African American child to desegregate an all-white elementary school in Louisiana in 1960. Faced with the decision to attend the all-white school near her home, or attend a black school with fewer opportunities, Ruby chose the most challenging option. Over time, other African American students enrolled at all-white schools, bringing about the integration of all students.As a lifelong activist for racial equality, Ruby created the Ruby Bridges Foundation to promote tolerance and create change through education.
