How to Prepare Your School for an Earthquake

Preparing for a possible earthquake involves learning what should be done before, during, and after an earthquake hits. When it comes to school preparedness, the participation of all administrators, teachers, students, and parents is required.
Checking for Structural Vulnerabilities

Schools built before the 1970s with mid-rise structures or buildings with unreinforced masonry walls may be unable to survive an earthquake. Check with your local building-regulatory agency to find out whether your institution is designed in line with seismic building codes.

Ensure that all nonstructural items are effectively anchored, braced, reinforced, or otherwise secured (i.e. bookcases).

Earthquake Supplies

Here is a list of supplies you should have at your institution in case there is an earthquake:

  • Fire Extinguisher
  • Adequate supplies of medication
  • Crescent and pipe wrenches to turn off gas and water supplies
  • Flashlights with extra bulbs and batteries
  • Portable radio with extra batteries
  • Water bottles on hand
  • Canned and packaged foods, enough for several days and mechanical can openers
  • Waterproof heavy plastic bags for waste disposal
Preparing Students and Staff

Drop, cover, and hold on - this should be the emphasize of safety training for all students and school staff while an earthquake is happening. Thereafter, ensure safe locations are set for everyone to meet at.

Preparation for earthquakes should always involve periodic drills to give students and staff the opportunity to practice what they have learned. Practice conditions the school community to react quickly and efficiently to follow safety protocols.
